Lately I find myself gravitate not only towards the tabletop wargames but also towards the tabletop RPG. Especially the lighter variants built on Year Zero Engine like Tales from the Loop, Mörk Borg, and Death in Space. But also that one time Humble Bundle was running a promotion on Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader and Deathwatch RPGs so I got them too.
What I find interesting in pen&paper RPG is that they have this cool social aspect that I cannot enjoy with video games because they grap the attention and keep going with it. It's impossible to catch up, have fun, and do anything other than focusing on the game itself. It's all consuming.
There is also the creative aspect: I love creating stories so the GM role was made for me. I just need some initial guidance into the setting, reasonable rules to follow, and I'm good. I'm inspired by the childlike wonder and thrill in Tales from the Loop, moodiness and aloofness of Things from the Flood, and the overal desperation and bleakness of the Electric State, sharing the same Loop universe. Or the absolute insanity of the Mörk Borg full of hilarious violence and accidental "uh oh I've been impaled" moments.
So if that's something that jams with you, expect some reviews and articles on these RPG systems. I started with Tales from the Loop years ago before the Amazon Series made it popular-ish but then life happened and I'm rediscovering my love for it these days. I've recently added other systems that are similarly lightweight so these will be covered too.
Hi I'm Pako! I'm a Product Builder living in Berlin 🇩🇪 where I run my own software and product design agency. I'm a huge fan of creative, narrative-based games, where it's up to the player to make the universe alive. You will find me playing many versions of Warhammer, Drop* Commander, or various flavors of RPG games.
